Spread the niceness

Oh lovely Negril, what I like to call the best of both worlds. As you travel west, powdery sands transition into crags with crashing waves. Amid blocks of stone and thatch properties lies the light elegance of Le Mirage Resort.

Le Mirage is a family-owned resort that sits atop the West End cliffs, while its sister resort sits on the beach. 3 tiers, covered by scarlet awnings of private balconies, overlook rolling waves of the Caribbean Sea. With only 12 rooms on property the boutique resort offers a low-key scenic getaway you probably never quite knew you needed.

Le Mirage Resort Rooms

Broad windows and glass doors offer a clear view of the cliffside landscape from the ground floor. Guests on this floor can rise up and instantly refresh with a quick dip. A pool which looks as if it’s flowing into the distant sea rests beyond the patio area, just footsteps away.

As you ascend the roseate stairs, the accommodations become more spacious. Second floor and third floor rooms possess balconies perfect for gazing at the peaceful view. Located in a central top-tiered room, I frequented the spun fiberglass furniture of my private balcony to admire the scenery. The most memorable part of my stay was being mesmerized by the full moon’s glow reflected on the rippling waves, after returning from the nearby Jungle Night Club. This scene, coupled with nature’s chirping critter choir, kept me awake for an extra hour on the balcony absorbing the moment, just like at a St. Mary Villa (can anyone relate?!).

All rooms include:

  • King or Double Beds
  • Wi-Fi access
  • Ceiling fan
  • Air conditioning
  • Basic cable television
  • Refrigerator
  • Coffee maker
  • Safe
  • Beach + Bath towels
  • Washrags
  • Body lotion
  • Soaps

Le Mirage Resort Infinity Pool

The pool area is lined with reclining lounge chairs perfectly positioned to catch the warmth of the golden sunshine. To the side of the infinity pool is a shady almond tree, adorned by fuchsia bougainvillea flowers that almost match the signature sunshades. The pool marks the starting point of Le Mirage’s clothing-optional zone, which extends to the volcanic rock platforms sitting on the cliff’s edge. We know from a previous all-inclusive stay that I’m not shy to let go at an au naturel site… as long as everyone else isn’t shy!

A ladder and steps carved from the rocks descend into the sea for those who dare to take a dip. The cliff edge is transformed into a sizeable event space, popular for destination weddings at the venue. With the sweeping view and available space, it has also proven to be a choice spot for cliffside yoga retreats (which occured during my visit). Decks of the dedicated area facing the sea can accommodate up to 80 persons.

There’s no lifeguard on duty; guests are urged to swim at their own risk

By the way, if you stay at Le Mirage Resort you are welcome to visit their sister hotel, Charela Inn, during the day to take advantage of their exclusive sandy strip along the buzzing 7 – mile beach.

Breakfast Inclusive Negril Resort

Colourfully-set tables are turned towards the carved openings inside Le Mirage Resort’s on-site restaurant. Cafe Au Lait serves breakfast and lunch dishes with a view of the horizon. Continental breakfast includes an assortment of fruits, toast, puddings, coffee and fruit juice, plus the option of cooked to order eggs. For lunch, Cafe Au Lait offers the options of burgers, pizzas, salads and more comforting favourites at additional charge.

Dinner at Charela Inn

For dinner I travelled to the beach side of Negril’s hip strip to Le Vendrôme Restaurant located at sister hotel, Charela Inn. Guests have the option of indulging within the lightly lit stone walls or outside under the starry night sky. Choose from the à la carte menu or a 5-course fixed price special. Just like 2 French-named eateries in Kingston, some of their meal options are both named and inspired by France’s cuisine. During my visit, I enjoyed French onion soup, house salad, and fish mousse appetizers before savouring lamb chops coated with rosemary sauce on a bed of sweet potato mash. Surprisingly, I left enough room for dessert: a crumbly gâteau basque cake, with hints of orange tang, and globs of creamy icing to the side.

Live Music at Charela Inn’s Restaurant

On Thursdays and Saturdays, dinner at Le Vendome restaurant is complemented by Negril live music, including singers with a band performing a selection of feel-good genres. The live performances also create a way to work off some of the vacation pounds. Guests enjoyed the musical selections so much that many were inspired to leave their tables and dance, ranging from slow waltzes to jiving.

Travel Tip: Stay 3 nights at Le Mirage to get a discount voucher to stay at Charela Inn
Ever since my 3-day 3-parish birthday staycation in 2016, Negril has secured a special place in my heart. The option to switch from the quiet cliffs of Le Mirage Resort to the sun kissed sands of Charela Inn can make the decision of where to stay in Negril that much easier for travelers who want to experience both. I loved that I could come and go between them, and that the guard on property was always alert to pull the gate during my late comings and goings.

How do you picture your stay in Negril, on the cliffs or beach?
