About 20 mins from Ocho Rios’ coastal town is Thatch Hill River Park’s nature escape. The venue has spacious grounds— fit for casual gatherings like camping, picnics and cookouts by the water. This could be one of the top attraction venues when it comes to riverside expanse!

Thatch Hill River Park, St. Mary Jamaica
Thatch Hill Road is along the St. Mary–St. Ann parish border and off the resort town’s beaten path. It’s tucked in a countryside area, minutes from other popular Jamaican river attractions like Blue Hole, Island Gully Falls and Calby’s Hidden Beauty River. Following a bumpy drive on a rugged road stretch, the main gate collects admission between morning and early evening.

These valley grounds are stocked with greenery; shaded by canopies of trees and bamboo bunches. Structures on the site maintain the leisurely vibe of its natural surroundings— incorporating constructed wood and thatch. The park property, flanked by the White River, features amenities and facilities like:
- A wide, central gazebo
- Outdoor cooking areas
- Small football area (fit for 6-a-side games)
- Wood seating
- Plank jumpboards
- Rope swing
- Kid tree swings
- Restrooms
- Changing rooms
Thatch Hill River Park can comfortably host multiple groups at a time. I’ve visited with 11 friends for a belated birthday celebration 1 Saturday afternoon in May. The river park had a decent crowd then; lines of cars and coaster buses populated the parking area. Each crew seemed to have their own personal space to enjoy both the grounds and the river.

White River Attraction: Thatch Hill River Park
White River lines 2 sides of the Thatch Hill River Park property. Swimming areas are marked here with signage and steps descending into the crystalline, cool water. On a clear day, its surface reflects a blend of forest green shades from overhanging trees and a tinge of White River’s signature electric-blue. It is 1 of the laidback attractions in this area that the 17-mile waterway runs through.
I was pleased to see a lifeguard on duty here during a weekend visit. In Jamaica they’re more common at government-operated attractions. This river portion has typically calm waters of varying levels. Some parts have a shallow rock base while others called for depth boundary lines.

Jamaican River Cookout / Picnic Spot
In more ways than 1, river cookouts and picnics are fulfilling wellness moments. A refreshing river rush is the soundtrack to good eats and good vibes! These experiences stage quality time with others in an easygoing, natural setting plus add hearty meals. This serene scene coupled with food is a favourite way to unwind.
My crew used an available cooking area to hold a chill linkup. Thatch Hill River Park’s outdoor kitchen provided wide counter space and a couple makeshift burner stands. We brought the rest— including a small grill, pots, utensils, coal, lighter fluid, igloo and all ingredients.
By this time, the group had already shared riverside culinary experiences together. Those times made our trip’s cooks comfortable going into Thatch Hill River Park’s rustic setup to prepare the meals. A mini bar and snack station on the property had items for sale ‘til around closing time. We were able to grab a couple drinks here to add to our bar stock.

Thatch Hill River Park Conclusion
At the time of this post, Thatch Hill River Park is solid as 1 of my top picks of places for sizable groups to ‘run a boat’(communal cooking) by the water. Some other rivers in Jamaica I’ve enjoyed cookouts before are Calby’s Hidden Beauty River (a few minutes away), ‘Unruly’ River and Reggae Falls (St. Thomas).
Jamaican riverside picnics can be just as satisfying as cookouts. Picnics/potlucks may be a better option for trips with limited time / cooking resources. Experiences like a riverside street food event and culinary workshops may be more appealing to smaller groups.
Let me know which sounds more like your type of par!
Would you & your crew have a river cookout / picnic in Jamaica???
