2 Eden Gardens restaurants, Tulips and Black Orchid, both launched menu items in early 2018, and SimplyLocal.life was fortunate enough to get a first taste! Both restaurants boast Jamaican dishes with an international twist, and are located at the elegant Eden Gardens Resort and Spa (which is also home to Kushite’s Vegetarian Cuisine).

The choice of which of these 2 restaurants to visit would depend on your dining experience preference: Tulips Restaurant has a more casual setting, great for lunch or dinner with friends; Black Orchid Restaurant is more sophisticated, ideal for special occasions.

Eden Gardens Ambiance

The regal Emerald Lounge was the evening’s venue of the joint Menu Launch party. It echoes Eden Gardens’ first-class ambiance, and acted as a lovely setting for mingling and networking. A Kingston foodie network, inclusive of public figures and bloggers, was very eager to sample the new dishes.

Eden Gardens Restaurants

Tulips Restaurant’s New Menu

– Honey Soy Wings👍

– Crunchy Chicken Tenders 👍

– Curry Pumpkin and Pineapple Ragout 👍👍

– Callaloo and Plaintain Lasagna 👍👍

– Jerk Pork 👍

– Coconut Cake 👍

Key:

👍👍 – Try It! // 👍 – Tasty

👎👎 – Wouldn’t recommend // 👎 – Not a favourite

MmMm!

The flavour combinations of the ragout and lasagna were unique and unparalleled. They certainly topped my favourites list of the new dishes, and a few others in attendance seemed to share the same sentiment.

Hmmm..

• The honey soy sauce could’ve been more commanding, but was in no way bad.

• The jerk pork was well-spiced, however, not as moist as I would’ve liked.

Overall Review:

The Tulips Restaurant additions all had 1 thing in common: flavour! Each item had a distinguished taste that left an impression on your taste buds.

Black Orchid Restaurant’s New Menu

– Shrimp in Batter 👍👍

– Fried Calamari 👍

– Saltfish Rundown 👎

– Curry Coconut Shrimp 👍

– Bolognese Pasta 👎

– Jerk Chicken Fontina 👍👍

– Rum & Raisin Cheesecake 👎

Key:

👍👍 – Try it! // 👍 – Tasty

👎👎 – Wouldn’t recommend // 👎 – Not a favourite

MmMm!
•The spiciness of the stuffed jerk chicken fontina admittedly caught me off guard, but in this case was considered a good thing. Outside of the heat that it packs, a little extra flavour soaked into the meat would be a preference.
• The 2 shrimp dishes are tasty and can leave you feeling as if more is always needed on your plate.
Hmmm..
• The saltiness of the rundown didn’t complement the other ingredients of the dish well, and is not as ‘creamy’ as rundown is sometimes expected to be.
• The bolognese pasta requires the most improvement; it didn’t taste as if the meat and noodles were cooked together, leaving the noodles lacking flavour.
• The cheesecake was by no means bad in taste, but the texture of it was not one expected of a cheesecake.

Overall Review:
It didn’t feel like as if the new dishes all belonged to the same restaurant due to the varying levels of satisfaction. With a few revisions to have all the menu items mirror a similar standard, Black Orchid can definitely raise the bar higher.
